We started solar-voyage after realizing that quality camping equipment was either prohibitively expensive to own or simply not available when you needed it most.
In 2019, three friends planned a two-week trek through the Scottish Highlands. None of us owned proper expedition gear, and buying everything would have cost more than the trip itself. We tried local rental shops but found outdated equipment and inflexible terms.
That frustration became our mission. We launched solar-voyage with a simple promise: provide the equipment we would want to rent ourselves. Every tent, sleeping bag, and cooking kit in our inventory is something we've personally tested on trails across the UK.
We maintain gear to the same standards we'd expect if we were renting it. Before each rental, every piece of equipment undergoes inspection. Zippers are tested, fabric is checked for tears, and sleeping bags are cleaned using specialized equipment that preserves insulation.
We replace items based on use rather than age. A tent that's been on five trips receives more scrutiny than one that's been on twenty trips in ideal conditions. This approach ensures you receive equipment that performs reliably when you need it.
Camping equipment represents a significant investment, especially if you camp infrequently or want to try different styles of camping. A proper four-season tent can cost £500 or more. Add sleeping bags, cooking systems, and accessories, and you're looking at £1,200 before you've spent a single night outdoors.
Renting allows you to access professional-grade equipment without the upfront cost, storage hassles, or maintenance responsibilities. It also lets you try different setups before committing to a purchase. Many of our regular customers started as renters and now own some of their gear while continuing to rent specialty items for specific trips.
The outdoor industry has a waste problem. Equipment gets purchased, used a few times, and ends up in storage or landfills. By facilitating shared use of quality gear, we extend the useful life of each item and reduce the need for individual ownership.
We partner with manufacturers who prioritize durability and repairability over disposability. When equipment reaches the end of its rental life, we work with organizations that refurbish gear for charitable distribution or recycle materials properly.
We deliver throughout England, Scotland, and Wales. Our Birmingham location allows us to reach most of the UK within a day's drive. Deliveries to remote locations or islands may require additional coordination, but we work with customers to find solutions that fit their itinerary.
For popular camping areas like the Lake District, Snowdonia, and the Scottish Highlands, we often have multiple deliveries scheduled on the same dates, which helps us keep delivery costs reasonable.
